Creating Under Pressure: Online Critical Pedagogy and Re-envisioning Library Instruction Practices During a Pandemic
Poster | Monday, May 17, 2021 | 2:45pm – 4:00pm EST
COVID-19 drastically shifted the nature of work and services offered at Gleeson Library | Geschke Center. Prior to the pandemic, the instruction program focused on the one-shot model where priority was given to fulfilling instruction requests with little time for programmatic envisioning. The switch to remote instruction carved a path for the development of asynchronous materials that incorporate critical pedagogy and accessibility standards. The shift to remote instruction brought challenges that created precarious employment for library workers, which resulted in altered job priorities while balancing the stress of providing the same level of service and productivity to patrons. This shift allowed for increased instruction experience for library staff that otherwise may not have existed. This poster will walk participants through the creation of a research fundamentals video series, discuss the working dynamics and conditions of how these materials were created, and highlight how to incorporate critical pedagogy into online instructional materials.
