Minimal Computing in Libraries

Columbia University Libraries

At Columbia University we are encouraging digital scholarly projects with less security problems, lower overhead, faster download speeds and lower maintenance costs. To that end we are investing in experimental workflows around static site generation for several genres of digital humanities projects. For example, for the production of digital editions we are investing in the Ed platform; for digital exhibits, we are developing ways to transfer from an Omeka site to a Jekyll site; for journals, we are building a pandoc/jekyll workflow with the help of an NEH grant. All these efforts seek to align library IT interests with the research interests of faculty, students and public service librarians. We call these approaches minimal computing.

We would love to see Metro support a fellow working on minimal computing approaches and the libraries involvement in producing scholarship using these techniques.
