Facilitating Campus Conversations about CRT, Banned Books, and Black Authors
Lightning Talk | Monday, May 17, 2023 | 1:45pm – 2:45pm EST
In 2022, Anne Arundel Community College’s Andrew G. Truxal Library began organizing monthly conversations, open to all college employees, that explore intellectual freedom and censorship issues around the banning of books. In honor of Juneteenth, we facilitated a conversation focusing on the backlash against Critical Race Theory and its influence on calls to ban books written by Black authors. The session was reprised for Banned Books Week in October and had the most participation in our series so far. For the Critical Pedagogy Symposium, we will discuss the library’s development and facilitation of these campus-wide events, as well as challenges and opportunities for continuing these conversations.
[This talk will be recorded live.]
