Resistance!: Teaching the 1967 Buffalo “Riot” in Archives
Lightning Talk | Friday, May 19, 2023 | 12:00pm – 1:00pm
Concerned about integrating the pedagogy of Critical Race Theory (CRT) into history education through primary materials, this presentation aims to reflect the practice of teaching the 1967 Buffalo “Riot” at the SUNY-Buffalo’s University Archives. Teaching modern American history in the spring of 2023, I arranged a class visit to archives by exhibiting the collections in the Frank P. Besag Papers (https://findingaids.lib.buffalo.edu/repositories/2/resources/548) that preserved the sociologist Frank P. Besag’s extended interview with the witnesses of the “riot” a few days after its occurrence. This presentation critically reflects on the issue of materiality within the teaching of CRT in the history classroom.
